Southeast Tech Horticulture Students Create Reality TV Show
Southeast Tech students are used to working out of the classroom, but the horticulture department has brought real-world experience to all an all-new level. Based loosely on the hit HGTV reality show Yard Crashers, Southeast Tech engages their horticulture students in three programs including; Horticulture Technology, Landscape Design Technology and Sports Turf Technology in a 48-hour back yard rehab reality show..
Southeast Tech’s Landscape Design Technology instructor Kate Parkinson assisted by Lab Specialist Stacy Hotchkin head up the momentous task to take the backyard from drab to fab at no charge to the homeowners.
According to Kate, “Since we teach through hands-on instruction, we already create patios and other landscaping projects but they aren’t typically permanent structures. This really made the career field real for these students. It is an amazing experience that we can't do without the support of our generous partners, donors and the hard work of our students!”
With the assistance of Vision Video Interactive (VVI), Southeast Tech documents every minute of the backyard flip on film. The footage is edited into a 1⁄2 hour reality show that airs on KSFY Television.
