Bring Your Own Laptop

Students in a BYOL program have the option to purchase a laptop from Southeast Tech or to bring another laptop that meets the BYOL minimum specifications. Students are encouraged to purchase a laptop from Southeast Tech if they do not already have a laptop that meets the requirements.

*Chromebooks, Android devices, and tablets running a mobile operating system are not currently supported for the BYOL programs.

Provided software

Students in a BYOL program will be able to use a virtual PC (vPC) to access a Microsoft Windows environment and any program-specific software on their laptop. Students are also able to install Office365 on their computer free of charge to use while they are enrolled in classes. Installation details and instructions for these applications can be found at http://guides.southeasttech.edu.

Support information

Students in a BYOL program can receive software support for their laptop not purchased through Southeast Tech at the Southeast Tech IT Support Center. This includes assistance with setting up and accessing vPC, connecting to the wireless network, setting up a Southeast Tech email account and removing viruses and malware. Basic software support is provided free of charge. Students requiring more in-depth tasks such as virus and malware removal or other services that would require their laptop to remain at the IT Support Center for assistance will incur a small fee for the service. A Southeast Tech loaner laptop is included as part of the service fee, to ensure that students are able to continue with their coursework while their laptop is at the IT Support Center.

Southeast Tech Laptop Specifications and Pricing

All students who are currently enrolled at Southeast Tech are eligible to purchase a laptop from Southeast Tech. The specifications and pricing for the laptop available for purchase are listed below. If you wish to purchase a Southeast Tech laptop, please visit the IT Support Center during JumpStart. Build Dakota scholarship recipients will automatically have an appropriate laptop or iPad reserved for them based on their major, as the cost is covered as part of their scholarship.

Purchasing your Southeast Tech Laptop

If you choose to purchase a Southeast Tech laptop, you will complete a Conditional Sales Agreement and receive your laptop during JumpStart. The full purchase price of the laptop will be added to your student account for the semester, and any excess Financial Aid a student has received will be applied to the cost of the laptop.

If a student is starting classes in the summer and wishes to purchase a Southeast Tech laptop, they may contact the IT Support Center to ask about purchase options. If no laptops are available for purchase, a rental laptop will be available for the summer.

Southeast Tech Laptop Warranty and Support Information

Southeast Tech laptops come with a 3 year manufacturer warranty to cover parts and labor in case of manufacturer defect or mechanical failure. During the 3 year period, the IT Support Center will provide complete hardware warranty support for the original purchaser of laptops purchased through Southeast Tech, regardless of current enrollment status. Students are responsible for repair charges not covered under the manufacturer warranty.

While a student is enrolled, the IT Support Center will also provide full software support including virus and malware removal for Southeast Tech laptops. After a student graduates or terminates enrollment, limited software support is available. This includes reloading original software from the manufacturer or assisting with updated driver installations. 

Loaner laptops are available free of charge for currently enrolled Southeast Tech students while their Southeast Tech laptop is at the IT Support Center for service.

Lost or Stolen Southeast Tech Laptop

A stolen laptop is a criminal offense and must be reported to law enforcement and the Southeast Tech IT Support Center immediately. The IT Support Center will provide the serial number and model to a student whose laptop has been stolen. Students will be required to complete a theft report with the police department. The report number and police department the report was filed with must be provided to the Southeast Tech IT Support Center. Students will be responsible for any remaining payments under the Conditional Sales Agreement, and will also need to work with their instructors and the IT Support Center to ensure that they still meet the requirements of their program. Since loss and theft are not covered under the manufacturer warranty, Southeast Tech highly recommends that students insure their laptop against loss or theft, which can usually be done through a homeowner's or renter's insurance policy.
