Upskill Program at Southeast Tech

Application deadline extended to Aug. 17, 2021

Southeast Technical College has partnered with the South Dakota Department of Labor and Board of Technical Education to offer educational funding to displaced workers. Eligible individuals may choose from several certificate options, take the courses tuition-free and resume their place in the workforce.

Eligible Programs

All STC UpSkill programs are certificate programs that begin Fall 2021 and are designed to be completed in May 2022.

Eligibility

UpSkill programs are available for people who have obstacles to overcome to secure employment. Eligibility criteria vary and can include: being laid off from a job, being low income or having a disability. Eligibility guidelines are outlined in the UpSkill WIOA Policy 5.42.

Cost

The cost of tuition at Southeast Technical College is $240 per credit for UpSkill certificates. 

The South Dakota Department of Labor and Regulation and the South Dakota Board of Technical Education will cover these costs, plus textbooks and supplies, for eligible students. 

Application Process

  1. Select Certificate

    Select one of the approved UpSkill certificate options. 

  2. Apply

    Complete the Southeast Tech application.
    • Select "Non-Degree Seeking" when asked "What kind of student are you?"
  3. Schedule Next-Generation ACCUPLACER exam

    Schedule your Next-Generation ACCUPLACER enterance exam through the myTech student portal. Login information will be provided to you during the application process. The test is free to Southeast Tech applicants. 

  4. Verify

    Once your application has been processed, an Admissions Representative will be in contact to verify the request and UpSkill funding. The Admissions Office will send your name and contact information to the DLR office to start the UpSkill eligibility paperwork.

  5. Official Schedule

    Then, Southeast Technical College will complete the registration.

  6. DLR Determines eligibility

    DLR will determine if you are eligible to receive financial assistance for this program. For an initial screening, register at www.sdjobs.org. Under My Benefits Plan, Create a WIOA Pre-Application. A DLR staff member will be in touch with you via email for additional instructions.  

  7. Billing Agreement

    Last, you and DLR will complete billing arrangements with the Southeast Tech Business Office.
