New Carpentry Apprenticeship Program - Southeast Technical Institute

New Carpentry Apprenticeship Program

Tuesday, May 16, 2017
Southeast Tech teams up with the Home Builders Association and CTE Academy to offer carpentry apprenticeship.

According to Residential Construction Academy Carpentry by Floyd Vogt, “One of the most pressing problems confronting the building industry today is the shortage of skilled workforce. The construction industry must recruit an estimated 200,000 to 250,000 new craft workers each year to meet the nation’s needs. This shortage is expected to continue well into the next decade because projected job growth and a decline in the number of available workers. At the same time, the training of available labor is becoming an increasing concern throughout the country. This lack of training opportunities has resulted in a shortage of 65,000 to 80,000 skilled workers per year. The crisis is affecting all construction trades and is threatening the ability of builders to construct quality homes.”

These challenges have led Southeast Tech to partner with the Home Builders Association of the Sioux Empire (HBASE) and the CTE Academy to begin a two-year Carpentry Apprenticeship Program on the campus of Southeast Tech and the CTE Academy.

This program involves 288 hours of in-class instruction and 4,000 hours of on-the-job training. It will begin on June 13, 2017 with a Pre-Apprenticeship workshop that consists of 8-hours of classroom instruction. It will be held Tuesday and Thursday nights from 5:30–9:30pm and will run through July. Once the student has completed this, they are eligible to enroll in the Carpentry Apprenticeship program which will require a $75 deposit to be applied to the $999 program fee.

The apprenticeship program will start August 22nd and consists of 4,000 hours and a 2-year commitment. Students will work for a contractor located in the Sioux Falls region in addition to completing classroom work. The starting rate is $15/hour. Classes will run Tuesday evenings from 6:00–10:00pm.

Safety and OSHA training will be taught by a qualified instructor and the CTE carpentry lab will be utilized for preliminary hands-on training before the student is matched up with a residential building contractor. This program is open to the general public and funded, not only by tuition, but by a grant through the South Dakota Department of Labor and another grant through the Care Committee of the Home Builders Association of the Sioux Empire. The student application process will be conducted online through the Corporate Education Division of Southeast Tech.

Hi Jason, We don't have just a class for framing at this time. We are looking at adding offerings and we will forward this on to our team in development.
