Twin Sisters Pursue Nursing Degrees Together

LPN Students From Belle Fourche 'Have Always Done Everything Together'

Millett Sisters
Kiah and Kendal Millett are twin sisters that enrolled at Southeast Tech together. The Belle Fourche natives are pursuing nursing degrees, and were able to get a head start on their college education through the Dual Credit program.

Kiah and Kendal Millett, 19-year-old twin sisters from Belle Fourche, S.D., “have always done everything together,” Kendal said.

Now that includes pursuing nursing school side-by-side. The sisters started taking dual credit courses from Southeast Technical College when they were juniors in high school, which enabled them to get a head start on earning college credits while also saving on time and money.

“Taking college classes while in high school allowed me to ensure that I did want to go into the nursing program here at Southeast Tech,” Kendal said.

Kiah added, “I did all my prerequisites in high school for the licensed practical nurse program. It was really nice because high school never challenged me, and I was getting to learn things that truly interested me. Growing up in a small town, you aren’t always offered the classes that interest you. Dual credits are a nice way to introduce new topics and truly find out if you are going to like your future career.”

This past fall, Kiah and Kendal, who graduated first and second in their high school class, enrolled full-time at Southeast Tech in its LPN program. Kendal said she chose to pursue her degree at the college because “it’s a cost-effective way to get my nursing degree at a faster rate, and it also sets me up for financial success in the future.”

For Kiah, “I decided to go to Southeast Tech because I want to start my career as soon as possible. I was already burnt out on school, so I knew I wanted to start and finish college fast.”

Outside of their schoolwork, the Millett sisters work at a daycare and are part of the Southeast Tech Student Practical Nurses Association.

“Attending college with my twin sister is really nice,” Kiah said. “I have someone who is going through the same things I am, and we can work together. We do everything together, from getting coffee in the morning to going to classes and work. There’s nothing that we don’t do together.”

Both Kiah and Kendal plan to become registered nurses and work in a neonatal intensive care unit, continuing their life journeys together.

Overall, the Millett sisters agree that the best thing about attending Southeast Tech is that they’ve developed lifelong friendships while earning their college degrees in a short amount of time, enabling them to realize their dream of becoming nurses sooner than they would have elsewhere.

“The thing I enjoy the most about attending Southeast Tech is that I get in and get out,” Kiah said. “They don’t waste any time teaching you the information.”
