Southeast Technical College students and instructors recently hosted an engaging, challenging math competition for 6th-8th grade students. About 45 students from six schools ranging from Vermillion to Brookings participated, and some will continue to the state-level competition. The
MATHCOUNTS competition series “builds problem-solving skills and fosters achievement through four levels of fun, in-person ‘bee’ style contests.”

Two STC instructors and 11 students assisted the South Dakota Engineering Society with hosting the competition at Southeast Tech. STC students assisted with grading and recording the exams, as part of STC's annual Service to Community Days, which take place each spring and fall.

Patrick Henry Middle School students won first place in the competition, and George Mickelson Middle School (Brookings) placed second. If they win at the state level, these students will be competing in a national competition.
