STC day logoSoutheast Technical College held its first-ever Service To Community (STC) Day April 20, 2021. STC day is a campus-wide effort that brings together students, faculty and staff to volunteer in activities that better both the Southeast Tech campus and greater community.

“The past few years, we have been looking for opportunities to increase our civic engagement and give back to the community that gives our campus so much,” said STC Day Committee Chair Kristin Wellnitz, a general education instructor at Southeast Tech. “This was our first event and we are pleased with the level of participation and results we had. In the future, we would love to expand the STC Day event into several days or even a week, but this year was all about getting our toes wet, brainstorming and seeing what great things our campus community could do.”

Several departments and academic areas organized their own initiatives, which included the Automotive Technology program providing free oil changes to six Veterans (supplies were generously donated by Sturdevant’s Auto Supply); a Campus Cleanup, organized by the Student Government Association (SGA); a book drive, organized by the Early Childhood program; a Women’s Hygiene Product Drive, organized by STC Healthcare programs; a youth sock, underwear and pajama collection drive, organized by the Business programs; professional headshots and family portraits from the Media Communications programs; and blood pressure checks for employees at a local facility by the Nursing program students at the Huron campus.

In addition, a group of employees prepared and served the evening meal at the Banquet West. Southeast Tech Horticulture students planted flowers at the Scarbrough Center, and the Bloodmobile was also on campus along with an ice cream truck offering treats to participants.

In all, the collection drives generated 865 items for distribution to local organizations, including the Children’s Inn, the Ronald McDonald House, the Banquet, St. Francis House and various transitional living facilities.

“A sincere thank you goes out to all who organized and participated in events,” said Wellnitz. “This is a busy time of the semester for everyone, and, none the less, so many have given time and energy into executing this worthwhile event.”
