Southeast Tech’s Welding program teaches you how to use a fusion process to join metal parts. Welding is used in many industries, including automobile manufacturing and repair, shipbuilding, aerospace, as well as in construction of bridges and other structures.
The welding process depends on the application and the conditions under which the work is being done. STC’s program focuses on ferrous and non-ferrous materials and welding in various positions and joint designs. Your other duties might include:
- Reading blueprints, weld symbols and welding procedures
- Identifying and preventing weld defects
- Welding equipment setup and maintenance
- Identifying correct welding processes

STC’s Learning Outcomes
Your trade-related coursework in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, is where you will gain expertise in cutting safety, processes, filler and base material selection, blueprint reading, flux core arc welding, shielded metal arc welding, gas metal arc welding, gas tungsten arc welding and plasma arc cutting. Classroom and hands-on learning for this program takes place in STC's Ed Wood Trade and Industry Center.
Additional benefit: Upon completion of the two-semester program, you could have the opportunity to take the American Welding Society (AWS) welding certification test. Your classes also help you:
Boost your Knowledge Base: You will learn about welding processes (GMAW, SMAW, GTAW, FCAW), filler metals, shielding gasses and weld symbols.
Problem Solve: Welders must identify and troubleshoot issues related to weld defects, applications, machine maintenance, and understand and apply AWS weld specifications.
